good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." this is a live picture outside of oakland police headquarters where the department is dealing with a mikor shooting. last -- major shooting. last night seven people were wounded after two gunmen opened fire. we'll learning more about the victims. we'll have details coming up in a live report. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve, what kind of weather are we gonna have? >> high clouds, spare-the-air day. a lot of these higher clouds are holding some temperatures up. there are some 30s for some. 50s for other. sfo is 51. san francisco, also 51. mild for a few. but cold for others. 50s are not that bad. you can see the high cloud deck filtering across. it will be with us probably most of the day. look for filtered sunshine here. a nice sunrise. that's for sure. but a partly cloudy/mostly cloudy day. temperatures, though, really kind of warming up a little

bit, especially toward the santa clara valley. we'll end up with 60s to near 70 on some of the highs, especially santa cruz and also girl bil roy. a lot of these higher clouds mean a very fair, hazy day. this will gave to partly cloudy skies tomorrow. 60s on the temperatures to a few upper 60s. here's sal. good morning. right now we're looking at a commute that is doing pretty well especially for this time of the morning. i have to a dealing -- i have a feeling it has to do with this bebeing -- with this being thicke weekend. bay bridge toll plaza is backed up for 10, 15 minutes before you make it past the metering lights and get on the bridge. we're looking at the commute in hayward. the traffic here looks pretty good. southbound a little bit slow from a street to tennyson and

then it gets better with slow spots on the way to fremont. back to the desk. we're following developing news in hayward. right now, police are on the scene of a shooting at an apartment complex. we just got off the phone with police and they tell us the shooting happened on the 1900 block of b street. newschopper2 and ktvu's brian flores, both on the way to the scene. we'll have a live report -- coming up shortly. also this morning -- police are looking for suspects in a terrifying shooting in east oakland. seven people were wounded. two of them critically. it happened shortly after 6:00 last night near a street barbecue. tara moriarty joins us live from police headquarters to tell us more about the victims. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. seven people, seven men between the ages of 23 and 31 were struck bullets. this happened right in the middle of a street barbecue. what's amazing is that a man was walking down the street with his children when he was struck in the neck.

the shooting unfolded the 6:30 -- at 6:30 at olive street, in a neighborhood notorious for violence. one woman said she heard up to 15 spots and feared for her life when a bullet whizzed by her head. >> i laid down on the ground and hoped like heck they didn't want to kill me. >> the shootings are significantly down. murders are significantly down this year. there's signs of progress. but obviously this stuff like this shows we still have work to do. >> reporter: a large group was outvid during the shooting. investigators are -- outside during the shooting. investigators are hoping they can provide information about the men and the getaway car.

councilman larry reed who represents the district says despite his efforts, shootings are up in the past six months. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:04. new this morning, in just a few hours, the alameda county sheriff's office will announce a break in a mysterious cold case dating back 23 years. deputies have arrested two suspects for the killing of steven rudiger in castro valley. authorities found his body in 1990. investigators will reveal more about the suspects and what led up to their arrest during a news conference at 10:30 this morning. 7:05. happening now, a winter storm is moving closer to the east coast. these are live pictures. atlanta, georgia. right now, there's no snow. you saw in the midwest. you can see from these live pictures, they are getting rain. there's droplets on the camera there. winter storm is expected to move through the carolinas and up towards pennsylvania and new

york today. it's bringing a lot of snow, ice and hail and so far at least 13 people have been killed. hundreds of flights have been canceled or delayed and the airlines, they expect things to get worse. coming up for you at 7:30, ktvu's alex savidge will tell you more about how the bay area airports are doing so far this morning. five san francisco firefighters may be disciplined in what is being called a drunk driving scandal. today's chronicle reports the firefighters could be suspended for what they allegedly did on the night of june 29th. that's when veteran firefighter michael quinn was arrested on dui charges arcrashing his ladder -- after crashing his ing. the da is investigating a possible coverup in the case. the hollywood reporter magazine says it has documented cases where the american humane

association awarded its no animals were harmed trademark on movies when, in fact, animals were harmed or even died on the set. examples given by the hollywood reporter include the tiger from the life of pi which reportedly nearly drowned in one scene and had to be rescued and 27 animals have reportedly died as part of the production of the hobbit, an unect expected zbrurn -- unexpected journey. a new report suggests the nsa may have spied on communications by google and yahoo!users by hitting the company's weak spot. the report suggests spies may have used fiberoptic cables that connect from data centers around the world. the data centers are said to be locked down with full-time security and surveillance. but somehow data was unenencrip the -- unincrip the -- unencrypted. a recent report found that

ooles cal football and basketball players had the worst graduation rates of any major college program in the nation. now the ncaa says african- american male athletes at uc berkeley have far more trouble finishing school than their white counterparts. the critics say this new report suggests cal is not addressing the academic needs of today's african-american athletes. california's community colleges and the cal state university system need more attention. that's when lieutenant-governor gavin newsom says both systems are vital to producing the educated workers california needs to boost the state's economy. a new report says the pessage of -- percentage of young adults earning associate's and bachelor's's degrees is -- bachelor's degrees is below the national average. anna reyes and her parents have spent a month in the city trying to find her brother, 23-

year-old paulo netto. he's an art student who vanished while visiting san francisco. he made several phone calls before he disappeared saying he was in danger. two weeks later, a body washed up in the cove but the coroner's office has not been able to say if it's netto. >> there has to be some urgency to identify that body to allow the family to go home, knowing if that was their son or brother. i'm not a pathologist but there has to be more of an effort made in the view. >> the family troped everything to rush here when he disappeared -- dropped everything to rush here when he disappeared. the st. anthony's foundation is collecting turkeys for the annual thanksgiving dinner. donations are being accepted at a curbside dropoff every morning until thursday. the foundation hopes to get a thousand turkeys to serve 4,000

meals on thanksgiving day. organizers also need other donations like canned goods, socks and toiletries. a south bay charity is helping thousands of needy families. this morning sacred heart community service in san jose will pass out hundreds of turkeys along with all of the fixings. now, they are still collecting donations and are hoping to give away 4,000 turkeys by thanksgiving day. it's estimated that one in five families in santa clara county is needy and having trouble making ends meet. >> that's a lot. >> yes. well, he took immediate action when a woman jumped from the top deck of the oakland coliseum. >> i wanted to grab her and just -- and just embrace her, so we fell together. >> we'll hear more from the retired marine who risked his own life to save that woman. we need to have merrill back at the head of the table for the holidays. >> the plea of a wife for the release of her husband. the health concerns about the

back to the developing news -- hayward police on the scene of a shooting at an apartment complex. these are live pictures from newschopper2 which just arrived over the scene in the last few minutes. you can see the camera zooming

in right thousand now on some of the police cars that are on the scene. police tell us the shooting happened on the 1900 block of b street. at this point we don't have much more information. we don't know who was shot or their condition. brian flores is on the way to the scene and we'll have a live report coming up shortly. 7:13. a contractor in philadelphia now facing murder charges for a building collapse that killed six people. now, these videos from last june show a crane operator using the heavy equipment that prosecutors say caused the collapse. the d.a. says the demolition should have been done by hand, not by a machine. he says the contractor knew that but wanted to avoid the higher cost. >> it was campbell who decided on the method of demolition. he personally controlled it in the matter that caused the catastrophe. >> my client did nothing criminally wrong. we'll vigorously defend the

serious allegations in a court of law. >> now, the district attorney says the contractor was also warned by an architect at the -- that the main call needed to be supported before the demolition started. the d.a. says the contractor lied to the architect and told him the wall had been taken down when it had not. the wife of a palo alto man being held in north korea is making a public plea for his freem. >> we're looking forward as a family to being together on thanksgiving and we need to have merrill back at the head of the table for the holidays. >> 85-year-old merrill neuman was escorted off a plane in north korea about a month ago just before he was due to come home. his family has sent his heart medication to him through diplomatic channels. they are hoping it gets to him. he was reportedly questioned about his being in the war the night before he was detained.

aides say bob menendez and senator mark kirk hope to have a bill ready for other lawmakers to consider when the senate comes back december 9th from its two-week recess regarding the iran situation. the supreme court could announce whether it will take up a birth control coverage dispute in president obama's healthcare law. at issue is the provision in the affordable care act requiring employers of a certain size to offer insurance coverage for birth control. some companies and nonprofits object saying it violates their religious beliefs. the fda is looking into whether the morning-after pill or plan-b will work if taken by women over a certain weight. scientists say it may lose its effectiveness in women who weigh more than 165 pounds. it might not work at all in

women over 176 pounds. in europe, a similar drug will not include this information on the label. and democrats are taking a hit in popularity a year out from the midterm elections. a month ago a cnn poll registered voters chose democrats over republicans 50% to 42%. when asked to whus a generic candidate. in the same poll now, respondents chose republicans over democrats 49% to 47%. the midterm elections could see a shift in power in either the house currently controlled by republicans or the senate where democrats have the majority. a barrier for the golden gate bridge is almost complete but there's still questions about how to pay for it. supporters say thele it 50 million project -- the $50 million project will save a lot of money.

the toll money cannot be used to pay for it. about 80 people thinking about suicide were pulled off the geg bridge. the deaths of two men whose bodies were found yesterday in the delta were declared suspicious. sheriff's deputies found the bodies in the house boat about five miles south of rio vista. no word on how they died or why foul play is suspected. more information is expected later today. 7:18. state troopers will be conducting extra patrols along interstate 5 for the thanksgiving holiday. they plan on covering the entire stretch from san francisco all the way to bellingham, washington. and they will be looking for speeders as well as aggressive distracted or impaired drivers. the extra patrols will begin tomorrow evening and continue through sunday night. amtrak is urging people to book their thanksgiving holiday tickets early to avoid missing out on seats. it says the days most likely to sell out are today, tomorrow

and sunday. to prepare for the extra crowds amtrak says it's operating every available car and scheduling extra trains. unlike previous years, though, service will not be extended between oakland's jack london station and san jose. 7:18. hey, sal, how is that flow going at the toll plaza? >> it's okay. there's a little bit of a backup here, dave and tori westbound. and this is still kind of a normal-looking commute. i think by tomorrow we'll see fewer cars. but right now we have a little bit of a backup with no major problems once you make it on the bridge. we've also been looking a the commute here on -- looking at the commute on westbound 24. that traffic looks pretty good as you drive over to the caldecott tunnel. i want to mention the traffic on the 880 freeway is getting a little bit more crowded heading south. it was really light but now we're getting more of a crowd. 580 is slow coming in off the

altamont pass. and there's a crash in burlingame. it's not on the maps yet. northbound 101 at broadway burlingame on the offramp. paramedics are on the way to that. let's go to steve. >> hold on, sal. >> steve? what a pretty picture. i was over there putting the finishing touches on it. a lot of high clouds. that will be it for us. everything as far as active weather is in the southeast and the northeast. i will she it to you -- show it to you coming up. it look looks like we'll get to the -- it looks like we'll get through the month without any rain. southern california might. the system is showing every sign of going south. it will spin in a lot of high clouds. pebble, carmel, south. that would be very weak. we'll get the cloud cover that will come in starting tomorrow into thursday. a lot of high clouds with us. cold for some. not too bad for others. i know a couple of locations in san francisco are in the 50s. high clouds at noon.

apartment complex. brian flores will be arriving on the scene in the next few minutes and will join us with the latest details. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic now. steve's coming back. what are you seeing. a lot of high clouds over us. nice sunrise, 30s, 40s and 50s on the lows. colder inland maybe away from the coast but not too bad. 40s, 50s in san francisco as well. also in downtown oakland. for some, it's mild. for others, it's cold. higher clouds will be with us most of the day. high, thin clouds. kind of on the mild side. a lot of 30s and 40s. overnight lows up a little bit due to the nature of the high clouds. you can see the high cloud check drifting across from the southwest. that will continue to play into our forecast today and probably into tomorrow as well. sunny day yesterday. today is the tweener day. high clouds, partly sunny, partly cloudy. a few mid- to upper 60s. here's sal. steve, we do have problems on the peninsula as i move here

-- as i move the maps to the peninsula. millbrae, there is a report of a crash just after the airport blocking lanes. it's right there and traffic is going to be slow on the bayshore freeway. now, if you want to use 280 as an alternative, it's actually not bad. it's a little bit rough through south city. but if you get on after south city in san bruno, you can see for yourself as i trace this line the road sensor is doing very well. it's a nice drive down the peninsula. you can avoid all of this foolishness here on highway 101 near the airport. you know -- avoid the area if you can. traffic is slow in both directions. bay bridge toll plaza, that's backed up for a 15, 20-minute delay before you get over to the toll plaza -- before you get on the bridge itself. san jose, northbound 280 traffic and northbound 101 for the most part, the san jose commute has been looking pretty good throughout. at 7:32. let's go back to the desk. a woman was hit and killed by a car in san jose last

night. janine de la vega is at the scene right now to tell us what happened out there, janine. >> reporter: we're on monterey road near san jose avenue. the scene has been cleared here but you can still see the police markings here on the ground where the car hit the woman crossing the road right around this area here. now, let's go to some video where you can see right around where you see this man crossing monterey. it's where a 50-year-old woman was hit by a small silver sedan. it happened last night just before 11:00. emergency crews were not able to save the woman who police say appears to be a transient. the male driver of the car that hit her who we're told was in his late 60s stopped and is cooperating with police. he was not arrested. police are still investigating. they've interviewed witnesses and they were able to determine that the woman was not crossing in the crosswalk. now, this is the 23rd

pedestrian death of the year in san jose. we're told that's the highest that it's been in the past eight years in san jose. so some alarming numbers there. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. on sunday afternoon, a 3- year-old boy was hit and killed in a san jose crosswalk while going to a playground. yesterday, the mother of elijah put a dozen red roses at a memorial at the corner of oak and vine. now, the driver involved did stop and is cooperating with police. the driver was making a left turn at the time. some neighbors say the lack of left-turn signal puts motorists and pedestrians in a very dangerous spot. >> we need to do something because -- that shouldn't have happened to my son at all. he was innocent. >> now, in addition to the latest accident janine de la vega just told you about in san jose, there have been 38 deadly traffic accidents this year and

she mentioned 23 of them involved pedestrians. happening today -- a deadly winter storm is moving through the south bringing freezing rain to the carolinas and as the day continues, that storm is it expected to move toward the northeast. forecasters are predicting several inches of snow and rain high pressure hun -- rain. hundreds of flights have been canceled. they say travel delays will especially effect anyone hoping to visit the mid-atlantic and northeast. here in the bay area, travelers are being advised to call their airlines and check for any problems. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is at sfo where people are -- say they are heading out early to beat the last and rush. last time we checked there were no delays. how is it looking now, alex? >> reporter: well, so far things are running smoothly here at sfo this morning. you can take a live look here. this is the big board inside

terminal 2. you can see as we scan across there, most everything is on time. no delays reported as of right now. certainly no cancellations. but obviously that's a big concern. a lot of people, they are warranting to fly today, today is the -- wants to fly today. today is the day to fly. things are pretty busy as you look at the security checkpoint. we've seen a lot of people arriving early their morning. really trying to beat the rush tomorrow. one of the busiest travel days of the year, that disally. -- traditionally. a lot of people trying to stay ahead of the storm that's threatening the east coast. things could get dicey tomorrow, the day before thanksgiving is shaping up to be a tough travel. that storm is threatening to cause widespread cancellations at some of the country's busiest airports including new york, boston and washington. the forecast in that part of the country is for a mix of snow and ice and it will just blanket the northeast. that's why people we're talking

to this morning are grateful to be flying out today and not tomorrow. >> leaving early, that's direct flights, no stopovers. you never know if you are gonna be side tracked to some other airport or not making it out. >> reporter: leading up to thanksgiving, the website flightaware.com has set up what it calls its misery map. this is a helpful tool to go on and track the delays and cancellations in various cities across the country. really helpful as we head into the prethanksgiving holiday rush and it will really hit hard tomorrow when that storm is expected to move into the east coast. so far not too many issues across the country as we bring you back to a live picture at sfo, a lot of people trying to beat that rush today here at the airport. want to mention also no issues at sfo, we also checked in with some of the other bay area airports at oakland and san

jose. no delays or cancellations reported there either. always a good idea to check ahead before you head down to the airport. live this morning at sfo, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the man credited with saving a woman's life at the oakland coliseum disagrees with nearly everyone else. the former marine says he is not a hero. ktvu news spoke to 61-year-old donnie navadad shortly after he left the hospital sunday. the stockton man was hurt while breaking the fall of a woman who jumped from the third deck of the oakland coliseum after sunday's raiders' game. the man said it was his experience as a marine in vietnam that helped him respond to this life-or-death situation. >> had i not done anything and didn't witness her hitting an impact on that cement, that would have etched in my mind until i died. >> the woman is listed in critical condition. there's still no word on why

she jumped. 7:38. a san francisco man warning people who use car sharing services. james alba says he just left the badlands car in the castro and used the uber app on his car to get a ride home, something says he's done several times. this time he says the driver was aggressive making him uncomfortable and alba who was latino says his race was the reason why. >> nothing but a dirty [bleep]. you are the worst of it. you are the scum. you are the bottom of the scum. >> now, uber says that driver has been suspended. in the meantime, alba says he will use cabs from now on or try another car service. hundreds of people are expected to attend a candlelight vigil in fremont tonight to honor a popular teacher or coach. 76-year-old john webb was killed over the weekend while driving on 680 near fremont. the chp says he was trying to collect traffic away from a

serious crash when another car hit and killed him. webb was a long-time teacher and coach at john f. kennedy high school. a memorial has been set up on campus. the vigil will be held at 6:00 tonight at the school. apple a moving ahead with the plans -- aning is moving ahead with the -- of ale is moving ahead with the new campus after getting final approval last month. the circular space ship design that was steve jobs's idea. apple has already received demolition permits and is knocking down buildings at the sites. in san francisco, market street is about to become a winter wonderland. tonight the city will switch the snowflake lights on. they are on the lamp post along market street. this year, the city added about

u.s. consumer confidence falls to its lowest level since april on weaker outlook of jobs and pay. still, stocks edging higher. shares of home builders rose after the government reported a strong uptick in home building permits last month. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is up 13. the knack up 7. the s&p is up a fraction at 1803. among one of the stocks a lot of investors will be looking at today, tech industry analysts did not expect a strong report when a bay area tech company releases their earnings. hewlett-packard is expected to say revenue and profits

declined again. last month they told analysts they expect pockets of growth in 2014. learnings from other leaders show the corporate i.t. market remains wobbly, especially in key markets like china. the fda says 23 and me is violating federal law because it's products claim to identify health risks for more than 250 diseases and health conditions. only medical tests that have been cleared by the fda are allowed to make that claim and there's concern false positives could lead to necessary treatment while false negatives could lead to a person missing out on necessary treatment. google has invested millions in the company. southwest airlines is raising fares for cats and dogs. the airline will chart to charge $95 for pets that ride

in the passenger cabin starting in january. that's up $20 from the current price. alaska and jetblue charge $100 and the cost on most other major air carriers is $125. in the early years after september 11, the cia turned some guantanamo bay prisoners into double agents and released them. the cia promised the prisoners freedom, safety for their family and gave them millions of dollars. the program took place at a complex at guantanamo bay that was named penny lane after the beatles' song. the a.p. says that program helped kill terrorists. that program no longer operates. the white house says hamid karzai has been told the u.s. will all pull troops out of afghanistan after 2014 if he does not quickly sign a security agreement. president karzai says he wants to wait until elections next april in afghanistan and let

the next president sign that agreement. that's even after 2500 tribal elders approved the security agreement and urged president karzai to sign it before the end of the year. president obama is now in southern california where he is scheduled to talk about the economy at the dreamworks studio. last night after arriving in los angeles, the president met with the family of the tsa officer who was killed at l.a.x. earlier this month. gerardo hernandez was shot by a handgun. president obama met with two tsa agents who were injured in the shooting. but earlier yesterday, president obama had to deal with heckling in san francisco from uninvited guests during his speech. >> you have the power to stop -- >> actually, i don't. and that's why we're here. >> president obama was talking about immigration reform at a

speech in chinatown. an undocumented student from south korea at sf state said he spoke up because he wants the president to use his executive power to stop deportation. >> the fact that he came here to rally the crowd blaming the congress, it is wrong. i think he should blame his administration. >> he says the only way to fix the system, president obama says, is to put pressure on congress to pass it. >> george gascon released a statement that says -- 7:48. groups all across the bay area are working hard right now to make sure families have a hot meal for thanksgiving.

ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom now with the reason why pam it's getting harder every year to help people who need help. >> yeah. this is a very special time of year for most of us. but a very tough time for fean families as well -- for many families as well. the number of people who need help has increased significantly in this last five years. the rescue mission in richmond will serve 20,000 meals this week alone. >> today is special because we're going to be handing out more than 850 thanksgiving food banks to desperately needy feales that truly have to make the choice between -- families that truly have to make the choice between paying the rent or buying food. >> i miss my grandma, my grandfather, my grandmother. everybody. a lot of people here, they are happy. and as long as you are smiling, i guess you are happy.

>> now, there are charities all over the bay area helping out during this holiday season. this morning sacred heart's community service will hand out hundreds of turkeys and all of the fixings. they are still collecting donations to give away 4,000 turkeys by thanksgiving day. it's estimated that one in five families in santa clara is having trouble paying their bills and paying for food. this morning in san francisco, the ain't anthony's foundation is -- st. anthony's foundation is collecting turkeys. donations are being accepted at curbside dropoff every morning before thursday. organizers say they also need other donations as well, such as canned foods and socks and toiletries to last through the winter. now, you can drop off donations at saint anthony which is located at 150 golden gate avenue in san francisco. if you can't get there, look for a food bank or other

organization near you. sounds like they all need help. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a lot of help is needed. thank you, pam. ten minutes before 8:00. let's check in with sal and we're thinking traffic is gonna be getting lighter. you are saying it's crowded and there are a few crashes. >> that's right. westbound bay bridge, you will see a crowd although it's not as robust as it would be, let's say, on a regular tuesday week. it certainly is slow as you can see waiting in line there for a 10, 15-minute delay. i think tomorrow we'll start to see the holiday light bump. now, let's take a look at the peninsula. southbound 101 right near the airport here. southbound 101 near millbrae avenue. there's an injury crash it has slowed traffic in both directions of highway 101. so if i were you, what i would do is use 280 instead as an alternate route. 280 as you can see is looking pretty good heading south. the major problems as you drive

on 280. look at the lower peninsula. traffic is moving along relatively well hon all of the freeways there. northbound 101 at oakland road. there is a new crash reported. also a new crash reported. this time northbound 880 at hesperian. right about near there is a new crash reported. the chp is on the way to check that out. let's take a look. northbound 280, a little bit hazy just as steve has been saying. filtered sunshine. haziness. i think i may be stepping over the line of steve's territory. but the traffic looks good? >> you are bored, aren't you, sal? >> i am. [laughter] a lot of high clouds over us. some of the lows were held up. 30s inland. 50s close to oakland and san francisco. some area on the mild side -- some areas on the mild side. the system doesn't look like it will do much. if anything, it looks like it's heading to southern california, maybe the southern santa cruz

mountains or around monterey. other than that, it's going into southern california on friday. we're done with that system. it will give us a lot of high and mid-level clouds as we head into wednesday and thursday. 30s, 40s and 50s. i mean, some areas concord, checking in at 39 degrees. some areas farther away not that cold. but we're still picking up a lot of 30s. 36 seems popular. santa rosa is in there. 40s elsewhere. 50 be half moon bay. 51 -- 50 half moon bay. 51 sfo. the crowds are not giving us a breeze. very, very hazy skies. the system that gave us the rain last week is now marching across the deep south. all sorts of heavy rain. tornadic activity is possible, then the freezing rain and snow no new york already and then pennsylvania. it looks like it will work its way into tomorrow. 30s for many. 20s in the mountains. 20s in reno. the next couple of days look

for a good mix of sun and clouds. mild for some. not too bad for others. 30s and 40s will give way to a couple of 70s. that would be santa cruz and also gilroy. some of those higher clouds might thin out a little bit today. but still overall, a mostly cloudy day. fair skies, hazy. the higher clouds will give way to increasing clouds tomorrow. there might be a little break in the morning but not too much. 60s for almost everybody. livermore we'll go 66. walnut creek, 64. concord in there as well. 68 morgan hill, low 70s. gilroy and santa cruz. san jose at 66. 60s on the coast in the city and along the peninsula, low to mid-60s as well. not much change as we get a lot of cloud cover. but probably not much else into thursday. friday it clears out and then sunny. but a little bit cooler on the overnight lows. 7:54. an interesting disturbing new report about student athletes at cal berkeley. why critics say a certain group of athletes is not making the

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." live pictures. we're right outside the oakland police headquarters. the police department is dealing with a major shooting that happened last night. seven people wounded. two gunmen opened fire. we're also following developing news of another shooting. this one happened in hayward. liver reports coming up on both of those stories coming up next. tuesday november 26th. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. let's have a quick look at weather and traffic. another spare-the-air day, steve? >> why it. visibility and hayes will be -- it is.

visibility and haze today. there's plenty of high clouds to go around. they will continue to drift in. maybe thin out a little bit in the afternoon. but then there's plenty to go upstream. look for high clouds drifting across. highs starting off. start off in the 50s we'll end up with a few 60s. santa clara near 70. 60s for almost all. morgan hill 68. we'll go 70 down towards gilroy. here's sal. right now we do have a look at the traffic, it's a little bit crowded. things might be getting better. you can see at the bay bridge toll plaza the traffic is not all that bad. as a matter of fact, there's a little bit of slowing in some of those lanes. but here we are and we're looking at traffic that's better than it normally would be on a tuesday. san mateo bridge, the traffic here is not all that bad either. you can see traffic heading out to hayward. when you get to the bayshore freeway, it's slow if you are driving north towards san

bruno. 580 we had problems on the altamont pass. they've cleared up. i tell you what happens on days like today. we do have problems. but when they go away, the traffic lightens up quickly on holiday days like this. back to the desk. would -- we are following developing news out of hayward. brian flores just arrived on the scene. what are police telling you? >> reporter: good morning. what police are telling me right now, is they are continuing to investigate this -- or this report of shots fired. but at this point, they are looking for any visual evidence of the shots fired. at this point, no victims. police are still at the apartment complex at the 1900 block of b street. i want to show you video that you saw around 7:15. there was a heavy police presence here this morning. obviously whenever there is a call of shots fired, that brings that heavy police presence. but again, right now, hayward

police are looking for visual evidence of shots fired. at this point, they've not found any. there's no victims. there's a twist. i just got off the phone with hayward police who said roughly five minutes later, there was another call of a possible burglary at this same complex. i took at the apartment complex myself. i did see broken glass. but at this point hayward police say both of these investigations are separate and they are taking a look at each of these cases to see what happened here but this is a very fluid situation right now as we take it back out here live. hayward police say they are gonna be here for sometime looking at -- no victims were found but they are looking at whether there was another burglary roughly around five minutes later. we'll keep you updated on "mornings on 2." we're live here in hayward. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. turning to our other top

story, oakland's chief said last night's bracen shooting was out-- brazen shooting was outrageous. seven people cut in a hail of bullets on olive. tara moriarty is there and you just got an qup date on the -- update on the condition of the victims. >> reporter: we've known all morning that the victims were wounded. one of them is in critical condition. that's good news. last night two of them were in critical. we also know that one of the victims was actually walking with his children when he was shot in the neck. now, all of this happened last night around 6:30 on the corner of 96th and olive street. people were having a birthday barbecue nearby. investigators say some of the victims may not have been the intended targets but got caught in the give. one woman heard 15 shots and ducked when a bullet whizzed through her head. >> one went straight through my pony tail and i believe if i

had not got on the ground, i would be dead. >> reporter: shootings in the area, it's reported, are up the past six months, despite the fact that police are vamped up efforts -- ramped up efforts. >> we've assigned five, six of our teams to this town because we know 50%, 60% of the crime happens on this side. >> reporter: investigators are hoping to provide some description of the gunman and get away car. oakland police are asking for the public's help. anyone with information is urged to come forward. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:05. new this morning a couple of hours from right now, the alameda county sheriff's office will announce a break in a mysterious cold case that dates back 23 years. deputies arrested two suspects for the killing of steven rudiger in castro valley. his body was found on redwood road in 1990. investigators will tell us more about the suspects and what led up to the arrest at a news conference later this morning.

happening now -- a winter storm is moving closer to the east coast. check this out. these are live pictures from downtown atlanta, georgia at the olympic park, i understand. no snow obviously like they saw in the midwest. they may be seeing it farther up in the northeast. you can see from the live pictures, they are getting plenty of rain there. this winter storm is expected to move through the carolinas and up towards pennsylvania and new york later today. it's bringing a lot of snow, ice and hail. more inland along the coast it is expected to bring rain, heavy rain at times and strong winds. at least 13 people have died. hundreds of flights have been canceled and the airlines expect things to get worse today and tomorrow. now, we've been at sfo all morning. so far, no reports of delays out of any bay area airport. but coming up at 8:30, we'll go back and check in with alex savidge to find out if that's the case. five texas firefighters

could be discipline -- san francisco firefighters could be disciplined in what's being called a drunk driving scandal. the firefighters could be suspended for what they allegedly did on the night of june 29th. that's when veteran firefighter michael quinn was arrested on dui charges after he crashed his ladder truck into a motorcyclist in the south of market area. the motorcyclist was seriously hurt. the district attorney is already investigating a possible coverup in this case. 8:07. the hollywood reporter magazine says it has documented cases where the american humane association put its trademark about no anmarms harmed -- animals harmed policy in movies where they were harmed. they point to 27 animals have reportedly died as part of the production of the hobbit, an unexpected journey. a new report suggests the

nsa may have spied on communications by users of google and yahoo!by hitting the company's weak spot. this report suggests spies may have used fiberoptic cables to connect from data centers from around the world. somehow data was un encrypted. the companies are working to secure their data. microsoft is also working on ways to secure its information. a recent ncaa report found cal football and men's basketball players had the worst graduation rates of anywhere else in the country. critics say this new report suggests cal is not addressing the academic needs of today's

african-american athletes. san francisco's city attorney is taking legal action to keep city college of san francisco from losing its accreditation. dennis herrera asked a judge to issue a preliminary injunction that would maintain city college's current status. the board plans to revoke the school's standing at the end of next july. herrera says that decision is improperly based and has already hurt enrollment at city college. 8:09. a brazilian family sill searching for a family member will head home today. paul of -- paul -- paulo netto is missing. he made several phone calls saying was in danger. two weeks later, a body washed up in the cove.

it is 8:13. new this morning in the amanda knox trial, the italian prosecutor in the case is demanding a guilty verdict and a 26-year sentence. knox is the u.s. exchange student from seattle accused in the grisly 2007 murder of her roommate while studying abroad. knox and her boyfriend were convicted in 2009 of the killing of meredith kercher. they were freed on appeal in 2011. knox who spent four years in italy did not return for the third trial. the wife of the palo alto man being held in north korea is making public plea for his release. >> we're looking forward as a family to being together on thanksgiving. we need to have merrill back at the head of the table for the

holidays. >> 85-year-old merrill newman was escorted off a plane in north korea about a month ago just before he was set to come home from a township there. his family has sent his heart ed medications through diplomatic channels and are hoping it gets to him. he was reportedly questioned about his service in the korean war the night before he was detained. 8:14. happening today -- the supreme court may announce today if it will decide a birth control coverage dispute in president obama's healthcare law. the issue is part of the affordable care act requiring companies of a certain size to offer insurance coverage for birth control. some companies and some nonprofits object. they say it violates their religious beliefs. the chairman of the republican party of florida is calling on congressman trey radel to step down after his cocaine conviction. he pleaded guilty last week to cocaine possession and admitted he bought the drug from an undercover police officer in washington, d.c. radel has

and sunday. now, to prepare for the extra crowds, amtrak is operating every available car and they are scheduling extra trains. unlike previous years, service won't be extended between oakland's jack london square station and san jose. well, at 8:17. let's check in with sal and see how things are looking in the south bay. >> all right, tori and dave. good morning to you. we're gonna start in the san jose area and look at downtune san jose where it's a little crowded. i was thinking it might be lighter but we still have the light morning commute getting into the valley today. 101 is slowing down. that may be the thing. 101 had an earlier minor crash. people may be bailing on 101 using 280 instead. using the commute in contra costa county, that's been decidedly better than normal from the benicia bridge to walnut creek. usually we see a lot of red on the road sensors. when you see red and yellow, it

means slow. when you see green it looks good. you see red approaching the richmond/san rafael bridge. the morning commute continues to get better at the toll plaza. i just got an e-mail from the chp reminding me that this weekend, this thanksgiving weekend is going to be a maximum enforcement period. chp will be adding patrols all over. you heard that story about highway 5. but they will do that all over the bay area and all over the state looking for dui and other violations. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. a lot of high clouds over us. kind of hazy already. it will be that way. spare-the-air day continues for monday and tuesday. air quality is worse today. we're kind of stagnant. 30s, 40s and 50s on the temperatures. a lot of 30s inland. most locations closer to the coast and also the bay just really kind of hanging in the 40s. we could use some rain but it looks like it will stay probably in southern california. we had two good days of rain next week. that's the same system now in the southeast.

traffic there. let's go back to the desk. >> all right, sal. new information, last night in san jose a woman was hit and killed by a car. janine de la vega is there at the scene of the accident and janine, you just found out this is the third deadly pedestrian accident in san jose in two days. >> reporter: yes. we just met with a police sergeant who told us that a teen was pulled off life support in an accident that happened in east san jose. here at the scene of the latest accident. this is in an industry area of monterey and san jose avenue. you can see there is a crosswalk. we've seen several people jaywalk in the middle of the road. police say that's what happened last night. now, in this video that we took in the last hour where this gentleman is crossing monterey road. that's where a 50-year-old woman was walking across the street when she was hit by a small silver sedan. it happened just before 11:00. she died at the scene. the driver of the car that hit her we're told was in his late

60s. he stayed and cooperated with police. >> the pedestrian appeared to be transient and was crossing the road. the driver of the vehicle did say she was wearing all dark clothes. >> reporter: police say the driver was traveling the speed limit and no drugs or alcohol seems to be involved. he's not been arrested. now, again, this is the 24th pedestrian accident this year that has been a fatality. it is the third pedestrian death in the last two days. as i mentioned, police just informed us that a 15-year-old girl died after being hit on sunday night while crossing white road at highland. in that incident, the driver also stayed and cooperated with police and has not been arrested yet because that investigation is ongoing. we don't know her identity and again, we don't know the identity yet of the victim in this latest accident here on

monterey road. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. one of the other pedestrian victims janine was talking about was a little boy. a 3-year-old boy hit and killed in a crosswalk in san jose sunday. yesterday, the mother of elijah placed a dozen red roses at a memorial at eke and vine where the little boy was hit. the driver was turning left at the time. some of the neighbors say the lack of a left-turn signal at that intersection makes it dangerous for drivers and pedestrians. >> we need to do something. that shouldn't have happened to my son at all. he was innocent. >> the driver did stop and is cooperating with the police. happening now -- a deadly winter storm is moving through the south bringing freezing rain to the carolinas as the day continues. that storm is expected to move toward the northeast. forecasters are predicting several inches of snow and rain along with strong winds.

hundreds of flights have already been canceled and airlines say the situation is only expected to get worse later today through tomorrow. they say travel delays will especially affect anyone hoping to visit the mid-atlantic and northeast. but even if you are not heading toward the storm, your plane might be coming from that area which can lead to delays all over the country. that's why we've been monitoring the situation at sfo since 5:00 this morning. alex savidge is there and says most flights have been on time. but passengers are still being warned to check in with their airlines. alex? >> reporter: well, you know, i have to tell you a lot of people thankful at sfo this morning that they are flying back east today as opposed tomorrow when the storm is supposed to cause a lot of problems. this is the view curbside where we're seeing a lot of folks here, families, heading off to

see family for the holidays. it's fairly busy inside. a lot of people trying to beat the big rush tomorrow on what is traditionally one of the busiest travel days of the year, the day before thanksgiving. things start to pick up as we take a look at the security checkpoint inside terminal 2. i just checked in with the folks at the operations center, they are telling me no delays so far. everything running smoothly into and out of sfo. you can expect things will get worse. the day before thanksgiving i shaking up to be a difficult travel day. that storm is threatening to cause widespread cancellations at some of the country's busiest airports, including new york, boston and washington. the forecast is for a mix of snow and ice that will blast the northeast. people flying back east this morning are hoping to stay ahead of this storm. >> i would much rather be traveling today than tomorrow. i don't want to imagine what

tomorrow will be like. >> reporter: the post family from san francisco is flying to new york for thanksgiving. they told me, actually, after they heard about this storm that was heading toward the east coast, they rushed at the last minute to pack extra winter clothes and hats and gloves to bundle up when they were back east. more than 3 million americans expected to take to the skies leading up to thanksgiving, according to the aaa. as we bring you back out here live to the big board at sfo, at this point, no delays being reported. no cancellations being reported here at sfo. i should tell you if you are planning to fly out of any of the other bay area airports, we checked in with oakland and san jose, no delays there either. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:37. the man who is credited with saving a woman's life at the oakland coliseum on sunday disagrees with almost everyone

else. donnie navadod says he's not a hero. ktvu news spoke with him yesterday shortly after he got out of the hospital. he was hurt white breaking the fall of a woman who jumped from the third deck of the oakland coliseum after sunday's raiders's' game. he says it was his experience as a marine in vietnam that made him respond to this life- or-death situation. >> without even thinking, you just automatically do what you gotta do. had i not done anything or witnessed her, that would have etched in my mind until i died. >> he says he still has not heard from the family of the woman he saved. she's still listed in critical condition. still no word on why she jumped. hundreds of people are expected to attend a candlelight vigil in fremont taunt to honor a popular -- tonight to honor a popular teacher and coach. john webb was killed over the weekend while driving on 680 in

fremont. the chp says he was trying to direct traffic away from a serious crash when another car hit and killed him. he was a long-time teacher and coach at john f. kennedy high school. a memorial has been set up on campus. the vigil will be held at 6:00 tonight at the school. a san francisco man issues a warning for people who use car-sharing services. 32-year-old james alba says he had just left the badlands bar in the castro. he pulled out his phone to use the uber app to get a ride home. he's done this many -- many times before. but the drisker's manner made him uncomfortable because of his race. the two got into an argument. uber says the driver has been suspended. apple is moving ahead with its plans to build a futuristic headquarters. take a look at what the almost 3 million square foot campus is

on some of the other top stories we're following for you -- this morning, oakland police are looking for suspects in a terrifying shooting in east oakland. seven people were wounded. one of them critically. this happened about 6:00 last night during a barbecue in east oakland. still no word of a possible motive. in the last two nights, there have been three deadly pedestrian accidents in san jose. there was another one last night, a woman was hit and killed while crossing the street near monterey road and san jose avenue. on sunday night, a 15-year-old girl was taken off life support after she was hit by a car. a 3-year-old boy was killed on sunday wheen he was hit -- when he was hit while being pushed in a streeler in a crosswalk -- stroller in a crosswalk. police in hayward with investigating a couple incidents at the same apartment complex. police want to know if a call about shots fired and a possible burglary may be connected. ktvu's brian flores is there in hayward with what we know so

far. brian. >> reporter: well, the story just continues to develop and behind me is the apartment complex where it all took place in the 1900 block of b street here in hayward. you don't see any police units here in the front but there are a couple of them in the back as they continue to investigate what happened here this morning. now, as we go to video, there was a heavier police presence here at the apartment complex. the reason was because roughly around 6:25, hayward police say residents had calls saying they had heard gunfire. when police arrived they scoured the complex looking for any evidence. at this point, nothing has turned. we found police looking at an apartment unit that had broken glass near the front. we called hayward police. they tell us five minutes later, around 6:30 this moesh, they -- morning, they got a call about a possible burglary. we don't know what, if anything, was taken. there doesn't appear to be anybody hurt. that's the good news. police say they are considering both of these cases for now,

separate polices and it's unclear -- cases and it's unclear whether they are related. it's unclear how long the police will be here to investigate. we'll keep you updated throughout the morning and day. we're live here in hayward, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. new details in the early years after the september 11 attack, the cia turned some guantanamo bay prisoners into double agents and released them. the asoergsed press sa -- associated press says the cia promised their freedom, safety for their families and gave them millions of dollars. the program took place in a complex at guantanamo dubbed penny lane. u.s. officials sold the a.p. that the program helped kill terrorists. the program is no longer in operation. the white house says afghan president hamid karzai has been told the u.s. plans to pull all troops from his country after 2014 if he does not promptly

sign a security agreement. president karzai has said he wants to wait until elections until next april in afghanistan and have the next president sign the agreement. that's even after 2500 tribal leaders approved the agreement and urged president karzai to sign it before the end of the year. 8:46. happening today -- president obama is in southern california. he'll be talking about the economy today at the dreamworks studio. last night, after arriving in los angeles, the president met with the family of the tsa officer who was killed at l.a.x. earlier this month. gerardo hernandez was shot by a gunman who pulled a semiautomatic rifle out of a bag and started to shoot. president obama also met with two tsa agents wounded in the shooting. groups across the bay area are hard at work to make sure families have a hot meal this thanksgiving. pam cook is in the newsroom with the reason why it's

getting tougher every year to help those in need. good morning, pam. >> good morning. yeah. according to the food banks and dining halls, the number of people who need help has increased significantly in the last five years. the bay area rescue mission in richmond helps families that are truly making the choice between paying the rent or buying food, picking up medicine or paying the utilities. they provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, job skills training and 20,000 meals this week alone. the people who come there say that there is a difference between being homeless and being at the rescue mission. >> i think being homeless is being alone not having anybody to turn to. the bay area rescue mission has its doors open for anybody who needs help. if you can't find a friend in the world, you can find one here. >> there are charities all over the bay area helping out during this holiday season and in particularly this -- in particular, sacred heart will hand out hundred of turkeys,

everything to go along with it. they are still collecting donations and are hoping to give away 4,000 turkeys by thanksgiving day. stop by there if you can. it's estimated that one in five families in santa clara county is having trouble paying their bills and paying for food. and st. anthony's is collecting turkeys for its annual thanksgiving dinner. donations are being accepted at a curbside dropoff. that's every morning until thanksgiving morning. the foundation hopes to get 1,000 turkeys to serve 4,000 meals on thanksgiving day alone. organizers say they also need donations to last such as canned foods and warmed clothing. you can drop off your donations at saint anthoughny's -- anthony's at 150 golden gate avenue. if you can't get there, please look for a donation near you. they all need your help. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, pam. let's check in with sal. he will help you to get to where you need to go.
